New EU 3-year control programme for pesticide residues

New Regulation 2020-585 establishes a coordinated multiannual control programme for pesticide residues in foods for years 2021-2023. 40 foods of plant and animal origin,  that make up the “European diet”, will be tested during this period. Since pesticide uses show significant changes over a period of three years, pesticides should be monitored in those foodstuffs over a series of three-year cycles to allow consumer exposure and the application of Union legislation to be assessed.  According to the relevant EFSA recommendation, 700 samples from 40 different foods will be evaluated.  These foods include foods for infants and young children as well as organic products. Samples will be distributed proportionally among Member States based on their population with a minimum of 12 samples per product and per year.
